onto describe un movimiento hacia arriba, en español muy a menudo hay que traducir con una periphrasis verbal.

La pelota saltó sobre la mesa.   = The ball jumps onto the table.

ejemplo The cat jumped onto the roof. Saltando el gato subió al techo.   He jumped onto the train. Subío al tren saltando.   The mice hopped onto the table to dance. Los ratones subieron saltando a la mesa para bailar ahí.
